Philippine military unveils bigger picture of coup conspiracy

MANILA, Feb. 27 (Xinhuanet) -- The Armed Forces of the Philippines(AFP) exposed a vast conspiracy among members of the opposition alliance in a plot to kill President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and establish a junta government, the military said on Monday.

"It appears that the President is included in the (assassination) attempt. Part of the plan is the attack on the Philippine Military Academy in February during the homecoming," AFP spokesman Tristan Kison told reporters at a press conference in Camp Aguinaldo, the AFP headquarters.

Kison said documents seized after the arrest of so-called Oakwood mutineer Lawrence San Juan last week revealed the coup plot.

Dubbed "Oplan Final Talk 2", the plan had three goals - to assassinate the President and top government officials, create a transition government and change the system of government.

Kison said the members of the opposition alliance were disgruntled military officers, rebels and sympathizers, leftists, rightists, members of the political opposition and some non-governmental organizations.

He added that a group of junior military officers who led the failed Oakwood mutiny in 2003 had forged an alliance with the New People's army rebels for the government takeover.

Kison said street protests in the name of People Power's 20th anniversary on last Friday aimed at heightening tension before the final push for a power grab.

President Arroyo last Friday placed the Philippines under a state of national emergency and ordered the military and police to arrest opposition forces involved in an alleged plot to topple the government. Enditem
