Norway to facilitate S.Lankan govt-rebels talks

COLOMBO, Feb. 27 (Xinhuanet) -- The government of Norway is looking forward to facilitating the next round of peace talks between the government of Sri Lanka and the Tamil Tiger rebels in Switzerland, Daily News reported Monday.

A spokesman for the Norwegian Embassy in Sri Lnaka said the Norwegian government was taking steps to arrange the next round of talks between the government of Sri Lanka and the Tamil Tiger rebels in mid-April, the paper said.

Meanwhile, the head of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission, Hagrup Haukland, said that the government and the Tamil Tigers had "recommitted" themselves to the cease-fire agreement.

"The talks ended on a positive note with the re-commitment expressed by both parties to implement the existing ease-fire agreement," said Haukland.

Asked if the two parties talked about amending the current agreement at the talks, Haukland said that was something left to be discussed by the two parties. The parties expressed their commitment to uphold the agreement.

The government and the Tamil Tiger rebels ended their two-day talks in Geneva, Switzerland, on Thursday and promised to end all violent acts against each other.

The Switzerland-hosted talks were the first face-to-face meeting between the Sri Lankan government and the Tamil Tigers since April 2003. Enditem
