KABUL, Feb. 26 (Xinhuanet) -- Five prisoners and a police got wounded as inmates clashed with warders in Afghanistan's main jail Pul-e-Charkhi on Saturday night, an official confirmed Sunday.
"The incident occurred at 10 p.m. (1730 GMT) last night and continued till 2 a.m. (2130 GMT) this morning. All the prison's doors are closed and more police have been deployed to control the situation," Mir Hayatullah Hashimi told Xinhua.
He also said that 1,300 inmates including women had been held in the prison situated on the outskirts of Afghan capital Kabul.
Hashimi also confirmed that the inmates were demanding meeting the vice president, president of the National Assembly and president of the Upper House of parliament.
The reason for the riot apparently is the distribution of the new uniform to the prisoners, but the director of the prison, Abdul Salam Bakhshi, said al-Qaida and Taliban were behind the riot.
A large number of police and Afghan army troops have been stationed around the notorious jail to tackle with any possible untoward situation.
It is the third riot in the jail since 2003.
In the last one that took place months ago, seven suspected Taliban and al-Qaida members disguising as visitors escaped the jail. Enditem |
