MOSCOW, Feb. 25 (Xinhuanet) -- The death toll from the roof collapse at a
Moscow market reached 65 and another 21 people injured are being treated in
hospitals, an emergency medical official said on Saturday.
"The body of another victim has been recovered from the wreckage," bringing
the death toll to 65, an official of the Emergency Medical Center was quoted by
the Itar-Tass news agency as saying.
Among the 21 hospitalized, 11 remained in grave conditions, Itar-Tass said
quoting medical sources.
The snow-laden roof of the market in eastern Moscow, built some 30 years ago, caved
in early morning on Thursday. The roof covered an area of 2,000-3,000 square
meters. Officials said heavy snowfall overnight, as well as design flaws, might
be to blame for the collapse.
Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov said on Thursday work to clear the debris of the
roof may take up to five days and a special technical commission had been set up
to look into the disaster. Enditem |
