BANGKOK, Feb. 24 (Xinhuanet) -- A Thai royal decree said Friday that the country will hold a general election on April 2 following a House dissolution announced by Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra earlier.

"The election date is set for April 2," said the decree which was read out on national television.

Thaksin earlier Friday announced the House dissolution following royal endorsement of King of Thailand.

The announcement was made shortly after Thaksin met King Bhumibol Adulyadej Friday afternoon.

"I have decided to dissolve the parliament," Thaksin told reporters after meeting with the king.

According to Thailand's constitution, a general election should be held within 60 days following the parliament's dissolution. Enditem
