MANILA, Feb. 24 (Xinhuanet) -- Philippine President
Gloria Macagapal-Arroyo and her officials consolidated support for the
administration amid threats from coup plotters and destabilizers to take over
and establish their own regime, senior officials said on Friday.
Press Secretary and
Presidential Spokesman Ignacio Bunye said that Cabinet members have declared
they were backing the President's declaration of state of emergency and ruled
out any resignations that might arise due to the crisis.
Members of the House of Representatives, local
government officials and those from various sectors went to the presidential
palace Friday.
Presidential Political Adviser Gabriel Claudio said
they all wanted to show the President and the people that they would not support
any unconstitutional means to remove the President from office and change the
government.
The President was on top of situation and had been
firm in her decisions as she had anticipated the events that happened recently,
Claudio said.
Aside from a coup, the detractors of the President
were planning to organize rallies and oust her by people power.
The President got the same support from her
partymates last year and her allies in Congress killed the impeachment case
against her due to alleged cheating in the 2004 elections.
However, 10 cabinet members resigned collectively
last July at the height of trust crisis surrounding Arroyo, making her to react
passively to dismiss the cabinet.
The President also apologized for calling an election
official after the "Hello Garci" tapes came out. Enditem |
