"Love Great Wall" banned
www.chinaview.cn 2006-02-23 15:44:18

Beijing, Feb.23 -- Beijing Municipal Administration of Cultural Heritage has stopped the project "Love Great Wall", just nine days after its launch, Beijing News reported today. The Changping District government has also banned its management office.

The office of Juyong Pass of the Great Wall launched "Love Great Wall" on February 14. The 88.5-meter- long and 7.5-meter- high "love wall" made of marble bricks can be found close to the Beijing-Zhangjiajie highway. Couples in love can carve their names in one brick, after paying 999 yuan (US $ 124.87). Four couples in total have left their names scribed in the love wall.

However, the love wall is located in one of the Great Wall preservation areas. After an investigation, the Changping District government reported this to Beijing's Administration of Cultural Heritage, which eventually shut the project down.

Changping District authority halted the operation of the love wall immediately and abolished its management office, as well as all the advertisements along the Beijing-Zhangjiajie highway.
