DAR ES SALAAM, Feb. 22 (Xinhuanet) -- An American tourist has died on Mount Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania, according to reports reaching here on Wednesday.

The tour guide who had accompanied the deceased on his ascent to the 5,895-meter summit said that the man, about 60 years old, had been among 40 tourists who had managed to reach the summit when the tragedy struck on Monday.

Kilimanjaro Regional Police Commander Mohammed Chicco has confirmed the death without identifying the deceased.

"It is true that a foreign tourist died at the top of the mountain and our rescue team has been dispatched to the mountain to find out the cause of the death," the police chief said.

"The body will be brought back after our rescue team reaches where the death occurred."

This is the fourth mountain climbing deaths involving American tourists this year.

On Jan. 4, a rockslide killed three American climbers on Mount Kilimanjaro. Enditem
