China's central authorities released Tuesday its first major
document of the year which calls for the construction of a "new socialist
countryside" as the foremost task facing China in the 2006-2010 five-year
period. |

Premier Wen Jiabao on
Monday pledged that his government would increase the funding for rural
development this year, the latest of a series of official moves aimed at
speeding up the modernization of China's vast countryside.

"We villagers now can drink clean tap water as urban residents do," said Zhao Caihong, with a broad smile on her face. "We used to fetch water from rivers, which were often contaminated with the livestock's excrement and urine." Zhao is also happy and contented that her family moved last year from a old shanty into a big new one, benefiting from a government-funded house renovation project. |

four-day tour around farms in the southern province of Hainan, and called
for efforts to build new socialist countryside.

The World Bank said the
proposal made by the Communist Party of China (CPC) for the coming five
years stresses more equitable development and more care for the
environment, although economic development remains its top
priority. |

improve public services, especially education and public health, in rural
areas, said Premier Wen Jiabao in a speech issued by the State Council on
Thursday. |

China's central government, Thursday released a recent speech by Premier
Wen Jiabao on rural issues. The Chinese premier noted in the speech that
the development of the rural area is a key issue in China's national
rejuvenation and long-term stability.

A central work meeting on
rural development, which concluded here on Thursday, has set the targets
for building a new socialist countryside in China during the upcoming 11th
Five-Year Development Program period (2006-2010).
