TURIN, Feb. 20 (Xinhuanet) -- Tatiana Navka and Roman Kostomarov captured gold
medal here Monday in ice dancing, adding Russia its third gold in the Turin
Olympic figure skating competition.
The couple earned 101.37 points in Monday night's
free dance, which put them first with a total of 200.64 points.
"This is my dream. Since I was a little girl, I have
always been dreaming of becoming an Olympic champion. Today it came true," Navka
said at a press conference.
Navka and Kostomarov teamed up in 1998 but their
partnership was interrupted after the 1999 world championships when Navka got
pregnant.
They reunited in 2000 and landed a gold medal at the
2004 worlds in Dortmund, Germany. They successfully defended their world title
in Moscow in 2005. The pair have also won the last three European titles.
Tanith Belbin and Benjamin Agosto ranked second with
196.06 points, wining the United States' first Olympic medal in ice dancing in
30 years.
The pair attributed their success to teamwork. "This
medal doesn't only belong to ourselves, but also to a lot of people who have
input their hardwork, inspiration and dedication..."
The young couple also won compliment from the Russian
ice dancing queen. "They are very talented people. They are making very fast
progress. I believe they will be the top in the future," Navka said.
Belbin is originally from Canada, and she first
traveled to the United States at age 14 in search of partners to match her
abilities. In a training camp in Detroit, the couple met and started skating
together.
Belbin and Agosto were the first US pair in 20 years
to win a medal at a world championships when they took silver in 2005, and that
was also the US best result for 30 years.
Elena Grushina and Ruslan Goncharov of Ukraine won
the bronze with 195.85 points. Enditem
