JERUSALEM, Feb. 19 (Xinhuanet) -- Israel's cabinet
has approved a set of measures against the Hamas-led Palestinian National
Authority on Sunday, local radio reported.
The decision was made at a weekly cabinet meeting,
Israel Radio said.
During the meeting, Israeli Acting Prime Minister
Ehud Olmert ruled out any contact with the Islamic Resistance Movement
(Hamas)and the Hamas-led Palestinian government, which he said would become a
"terrorist" entity.
Hamas does not recognize Israel and was involved in
suicide attacks against Israel.
"It is clear that given the Hamas majority in the
Palestinian parliament and the fact that the role of forming a government has
been given to Hamas, the Palestinian (National) Authority is effectively
becoming a terrorist authority," Olmert said.
He said Israel was to halt the transfer of funds to the
PNA immediately.
Speaking of Israel's future ties with the PNA, Olmert
said it "will not hold contacts with a regime in which Hamas takes part, be it
marginal, significant or all-encompassing."
Olmert's harsh statement against Hamas came one day after
a Hamas-dominated Palestinian legislature was sworn in both in the Gaza Strip
and the West Bank, after its sweeping victory in the Jan. 25 Palestinian
legislative elections.
However, Olmert assured that Israel would allow
humanitarian aid to reach the Palestinians and Israel has "no intention to
impinge on the humanitarian needs of the Palestinian
population."Enditem |
