BANGKOK, Feb. 18 (Xinhuanet) -- France has voiced its reservations over the Thai candidacy for the top UN post, saying it is too early for a decision, Thai News Agency reported Saturday.

    Thailand has named its deputy prime minister Surakiart Sathirathai to contest in the race to replace outgoing UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

    Philippe Douste-Blazy, who is currently accompanying French President Jacques Chirac on a state visit to Thailand, said on Saturday that Surakiart is a capable man and would suit the job, but France thinks there is no rush and it is waiting for the right time to declare its position on the issue, according to Thai Foreign Minister Kantathi Suphamongkhon.

    Earlier, Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said he would seek French support for the country's candidate from President Jacques Chirac. Enditem
