GAZA, Feb. 18 (Xinhuanet) -- About 200 armed Palestinians from the security apparatuses on Saturday clashed with Palestinian police in Gaza City where the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC)'s first session was underway, Palestinian security sources and witnesses said.
The witnesses said the armed men demanded their overdue salaries just before the building of Rashad al-Saawa, where the new Palestinian parliament was to be sworn in.
The demonstrators headed toward the building after Israel prevented Gaza lawmakers from reaching the West Bank city of Ramallah to participate in the parliament session.
The Palestinian police came to the scene and tried to prevent the security members who were in their formal uniforms from carrying out any further steps or obstructing the PLC session, according to the witnesses.
The newly elected PLC convened its first session on Saturday both at al-Nuqata'a, the Palestinian presidential headquarters in Ramallah, and in Gaza City. Enditem |
