ROME, Feb. 17 (Xinhuanet) -- The Rome prosecutor's
office has opened an investigation into the mysterious deaths of two Italian aid
workers in Kabul, Italian News Agency ANSA reported Friday.
The prosecutor's office here is responsible for all incidents which take place abroad and it has already contacted
military authorities in Afghanistan for information on the deaths.
Iendi Iannelli and Stefano Siringo were found dead in
their beds in the guesthouse of the International Development Law Organization
(IDLO the Rome-based aid organization for which Iannelli worked. Siringo was an
Italian Foreign Ministry employee.
Their bodies showed no signs of violence and at first
investigators thought they might have died of carbon monoxide poisoning from a
faulty heater.
Italian Ambassador Jolanda Brunetti, however, who is
responsible for the Italian Justice Office in Kabul, told Italian radio that the
heater in the room was electric.
Medical sources in Kabul also ruled out carbon
monoxide poisoning but told PeaceReporter, an online news agency linked with
Italy's Emergency aid organization, that the two Italians "do appear to have
been in some way poisoned".
IDLO is an international organization dedicated to
promoting the rule of law in the developing world. It was founded in 1983 and
since 1991 has had permanent observer status at the United Nations.
It opened its office in Kabul in 2003 where it offers
legal advice and assistance to local institutions. It has also collaborated in
running training course for 450 judges. Enditem¡¡
