WASHINGTON, Feb. 17 (Xinhuanet) -- The Texas lawyer shot by U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally during a weekend quail hunting trip was discharged from a hospital in the state on Friday.

In his first public comments on the shooting incident last Saturday, the victim, 78-year-old Harry Whittington, said in Corpus Christi where he was treated that he was sorry for all the trouble Cheney had faced over the past week.

"My family and I are deeply sorry for all that Vice President Cheney and his family have had to go through this week," said Whittington, who was shot accidentally by Cheney when the two were hunting together in a ranch in southern Texas.

"We all assume certain risks in what we do, in what activities we pursue," said the Bush-Cheney campaign donor.

Cheney remained publicly silent for several days since the shooting mishap before detailing the accident Wednesday in a television interview.

He said he accepted full responsibility for the shooting and said it was "one of the worst days of my life."

The vice president has been cleared of any wrongdoing by local police in Texas, and the case was closed.

A probe into the incident had determined Cheney shot Whittington by accident, and therefore no legal action was needed,Ramon Salinas, the county sheriff of Kenedy County has said. Enditem
