TIRANA, Feb. 16 (Xinhuanet) -- Albanian President Alfred Moisiu claimed on Thursday that measures adopted by the government in its prevention of bird flu are effective so far, urging the country to take further actions in this respect.

During the National Security Council meeting, called specially for the bird flu issue, Moisiu said that "the measures taken by the government are positive and field reports on time."

He pointed out that the set-up of the National Committee Against Flu Pandemic and the establishment of joint task forces between the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Agriculture are very useful.

The president also urged the public to stay calm.

"It is not time to panic. Still we have to take all measures to be fully ready in case of a bird flu outbreak, " he said.

The head of state asked for strict enforcement of customs and border control, and urged veterinarians and experts to strengthen the inspection of the waters on Albanian territory.

Although it is surrounded by bird flu affected countries and is on the path of migrating birds, Albania has so far reported no case of bird flu infection on its territory.

In another development, the dead swan found yesterday on a Macedonian lake was confirmed to have no bird flu virus in its body, Macedonian Ministry of Agriculture told the local media. Enditem
