Uganda imposes restrictions on internal movement of poultry

KAMPALA, Feb. 15 (Xinhuanet) -- The Ugandan government has decidedto impose restrictions on internal movement of poultry and intensify surveillance after reports that the deadly bird influenza had been found in northern Nigeria.

Dr. Nicholas Kauta, commissioner in charge of animal health and entomology, was quoted by The New Vision newspaper as saying on Wednesday that it was unlikely that the government would lift a ban on importation of poultry products imposed three months ago.

Kauta said they had formed a team to deal with the bird flu that spread from Asia to eastern Europe.

He said the team had earlier proposed to the cabinet to have the ban imposed on importation of poultry products lifted, saying countries where cases have not been reported can export to Uganda.

Kauta also said the team is still mobilizing funds from donors including the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations to undertake different activities. Enditem
