Danish FM says cartoon conflict could last 100 years

STOCKHOLM, Feb. 14 (Xinhuanet) -- The most violent demonstrations about the Prophet Mohammad drawings seem to have ebbed out, but the crisis could continue, Danish Foreign Minister Per Stig Moeller said in comments published by the Copenhagen Post Tuesday.

ˇˇˇˇMoeller expressed cautious optimism that a solution to the Mohammed crisis was nearing, but warned that the conflict could continue for a century.

Moeller acknowledged that the conflict represented the worst foreign affairs crisis since 1945, adding the situation appeared to have cooled off.

"The general picture does not indicate a further escalation. I can't say if the crisis has topped off yet -- it shifts back and forth all the time. But I hope there is a chance for cautious optimism," he said.

Danish daily Jyllands-Poste published 12 cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad last September, which provoked an outrage in the Muslim world and a boycott of Danish products in most Muslim countries.

Denmark evacuated embassy personnel from Syria, Iran, and Indonesia over the weekend after extremist groups announced that they were targeting Danish citizens.

Moeller noted that the angry demonstrations during the past weeks revealed deep-seated tensions between the Western and Muslim worlds. Enditem
