World champion finishes 2nd after race one in women's 500m speedskating

    TURIN, Feb. 14 (Xinhuanet) -- Wang Manli, the Chinese world champion in 2004 and 2005, finished second after race one in the women's 500m speed skating at the Turin Winter Olympics here on Tuesday.

    Wang, who won the 500m at the 2004 and 2005 World Championships, finished in 38.31 seconds after race one, second to Svetlana Zhurova of Russia, world champion in 500m in 1996. Zhurova led the race in 38.23 seconds.

    Wang Beixing, another Chinese who also has a strong chance for a medal, ranked eighth in 38.71 seconds. She had finished second to Wang Manli at the 2005 Worlds in Inzell, Germany.

    Wang Beixing had some success this year at the World Cup, finishing on the podium in all four of her starts. Enditem
