COLOMBO, Feb. 13 (Xinhuanet) -- A Sri Lankan civil society group is proceeding to the Tamil Tiger rebel's territory to promote peace ahead of scheduled talks between the government and rebels.
The team of PAFFREL (People's Action for Free and Fair Elections) activists left here Monday for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) held territory in Kilinochchi in the north, Kingsley Rodrigo, the PAFFREL executive director, said.
Kingsley Rodrigo, the PAFFREL executive director, told reporters on the eve of his trip that he was hoping to have talks with the political wing of the LTTE and return to Colombo Tuesday to meet government officials.
"We want the talks (in Geneva) to have positive outcome," Rodrigo said.
The Tigers and the government are billed to meet in Geneva on Feb. 22-23.
The Tigers have been blamed by the international truce monitors, the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM), for truce violations since the agreement came into force in Feb. 22, 2002.
The LTTE was also blamed for the assassination of the former Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar and nearly 100 deaths of members of government troops since December 2005. Enditem |
