Serbian president calls for tolerance over controversial cartoons

BELGRADE, Feb. 11 (Xinhuanet) -- Serbian President Boris Tadic called on all citizens on Saturday to demonstrate religious tolerance, in response to protests against the publication of cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammad in some countries.

"I believe that every citizen has the right to free expression of their religious feelings," Tadic said, adding that it is unacceptable to express those feelings by burning any country's flags.

Tadic called on all citizens to respect other peoples' faith and religious feelings, to demonstrate tolerance and mutual understanding.

Earlier on Saturday, thousands of Novi Pazar Muslim citizens insouth Serbia protested against the publishing of the controversial cartoons in Denmark and some other countries.

The protesters walked through the town center, closing the protest rally with the burning of the flags of Denmark and Israel.

Serbia's population of 7.5 million includes some 300,000 Muslims. Enditem
