BAGHDAD, Feb. 9 (Xinhuanet) -- A suicide car bomb blew up at acheckpoint near the Syrian border, killing five Iraqis and wounding three others, including a U.S. marine, the U.S. military said on Thursday.

The incident occurred Wednesday when a suicide bomber drove an explosive-borne vehicle into a checkpoint in the New Obeidi, about 20 km from the border with Syria, the military said in a statement.

The attack killed two Iraqi soldiers and three civilians, wounding a U.S. marine and two Iraqi soldiers, added the statement.

The region, in the open area to the north of the Euphrates River, is known to the U.S. military as a smuggling route and sanctuary for foreign fighters.  Enditem
