BEIJING, Feb. 9 -- Madonna channeled Studio 54 and the Gorillaz a high-tech
animation studio in a clever opening medley at the Grammy Awards.
Gorillaz, a studio concoction represented
by cartoon videos, replicated the animation while "performing" their
Grammy-nominated hit "Feel Good Inc." with the real-life De La Soul. Unlike the
song itself, the effects were quite stunning, with the "singer" checking his
cell phone during an instrumental break and stumbling as he attempted to sit on
a stool.
The hulking "drummer" spun a drumstick on one finger like a propeller and
even appeared to drift off to sleep before being jolted awake by Madonna's
emergence on the stage.
With her flip hairdo, Madonna's "Hung Up" hearkened to the classic days of
disco. She writhed onstage with her background dancers, male and female, as a
gigantic mirror ball loomed in the background.
It was a fun, frivolous choice. And a special shout-out to Madonna's
personal trainer, who had the bare-legged Madge, age 47, sculpted and toned to
perfection.
