CAIRO, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- Thousands of Egyptian students on Monday protested against cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammad which were first published by a Danish newspaper, the official MENA news agency reported.
Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Sheikh Mohamed Sayyed Tantawi, who led the demonstration, also called for boycotting Danish products.
"Boycotting the products of all countries which insulted the Prophet Mohammad is a religious order that should be followed by all Muslims," Tantawi was quoted as saying.
Danish daily Jyllands-Poste first published 12 cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad last September, which were accused by many Muslims as being offending.
Over the past few days, the cartoons, which were reprinted in some other European press, have provoked widespread protests and calls for boycotting Danish products in the Muslim world. Enditem |
