TEHRAN, Feb. 6 (Xinhuanet) -- Iran's chief nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani said on Monday that Tehran has informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) of its decision to resume full-scale uranium enrichment.
Iran has informed the IAEA of the date of the resumption and the agency's inspectors are expected to come to Iran in the coming days to supervise the move, Larijani was quoted by the semi-official students' news agency ISNA as saying.
Larijani made the statement one day after Iran ended all voluntary cooperation with the IAEA, including snap checks of its nuclear sites and suspension of uranium enrichment.
The move came following an emergency meeting of the IAEA board of governors in Vienna on Saturday which adopted a resolution to report Iran's nuclear program to the UN Security Council.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad denounced the UN nuclear watchdog's decision as being made under the pressure of certain countries and lacking legal justification.
Uranium enriched to a low level can be used for reactor fuel, but highly-enriched uranium can be used to make atomic bombs.
Washington has accused Iran of secretly developing nuclear weapons and the European Union, long-time broker over Iran'snuclear issue, also holds that Iran's full mastery of nuclear fuel cycle technology would possibly lead to military usage.
But Iran insists that its nuclear program is fully peaceful andaimed at meeting rising domestic demand for electricity. Enditem |
