Chronology of major peacetime ferry disasters

    BEIJING, Feb. 3 (Xinhuanet) -- Egyptian maritime authorities said on Friday that 14 dead bodies had been found and 100 survivors rescued after an Egyptian ferry carrying some 1,300 people sank in the Red Sea.

    Earlier, an Egyptian shipping company official confirmed that the Al Salam 89 had disappeared with some 1,300 passengers between the Saudi port of Duba and the Egyptian port of Safaga.

    Following is a chronology of some of the world's worst ferry disasters in the past 15 years:

    Dec. 20, 1987 - PHILIPPINES - The inter-island vessel Dona Paz, overloaded with passengers going home to central Leyte province for the holidays, collided with the tanker Vector, leading to the death of 4,341 people.

    Oct. 24, 1988 - PHILIPPINES - Dona Marilyn, sister ship of Dona Paz, sank off Leyte province, killing 250.

    Dec. 27, 1988 - BANGLADESH - At least 200 died when the ferry Haisal sank on the River Dhaleswari after being rammed by a cargo vessel.

    Dec. 15, 1991 - EGYPT - 464 people were killed when the Salem Express hit coral outside the Red Sea port of Safaga, 600 km (375 miles) southeast of Cairo.

    Feb. 17, 1993 - HAITI - Passenger ferry Neptune with 800-2,000aboard sank off Petit Goave, west of Port-au-Prince, after leaving the port of Jeremie. Several hundred passengers were killed.

    July 2, 1993 - PHILIPPINES - 279 pilgrims drowned when a floating pagoda collapsed during a religious festival on the Bocaue river, 20 km north of Manila.

    Oct. 10, 1993 - SOUTH KOREA - The Seohae ferry, overloaded with 362 people, capsized off Puan county killing 292.

    April 29, 1994 - KENYA - A ferry capsized after leaving the village of Mtongwe near Mombasa, killing 272 people.

    Aug. 20, 1994 - BANGLADESH - More than 300 people died after an overcrowded ferry traveling from Dhaka sank in the Meghna river while trying to berth at Chandpur terminal.

    Sept. 28, 1994 - ESTONIA/FINLAND - 852 people drowned when the ferry Estonia carrying 989 people sank off the Finnish island of Utoe, en route from Tallinn to Stockholm.

    June 29, 2000 - INDONESIA - Some 550 people died when an Indonesian ferry, the Cahaya Bahari, packed with 561 refugees and other passengers, sank off the coast of Sulawesi.

    Oct. 19, 2001 - INDONESIA - 353 people died when an overcrowded boat, carrying asylum seekers to Australia from Lampung in Sumatra, sank near Java.

    May 3, 2002 - BANGLADESH - At least 450 people drowned when the M.V. Salahuddin-2 ferry with about 500 on board sank in the Meghna river, south of Dhaka.

    Sept. 26, 2002 - SENEGAL - State-owned ferry Joola, designed to carry 550 people, capsized off the Gambian coast with nearly 2,000 passengers and crew aboard. 1,863 people were killed and only 64 were rescued.

    July 9, 2003 - BANGLADESH - Up to 400 people drowned after the ferry M.V. Nasreen sank in the Meghna river 170 km southeast of Dhaka.

    May 23, 2004 - At least 200 die when two ferries sank in the Meghna river.

    Feb. 19, 2005 - 154 were killed when ferry MV Moharaj sank in Buriganga river near Dhaka city on its way to southeastern Matlab from Dhaka. Enditem
