Rafael Belaunde resigns Peru election candidacy

LIMA, Feb. 1 (Xinhuanet) -- Rafael Belaunde has announced to resign the post of presidential candidate of the Peru Possible party (PP) for April's general elections following internal conflicts, local press said on Wednesday.

Belaunde, who served as Peruvian president for two mandates from 1963 to 1968 and 1980 to 1985, was invited to stand as PP's candidate again this year.

In his resignation letter on Tuesday, Belaunde cited his exclusion from taking part in internal PP matters such as the selection of parliamentary candidates and his inability to convince PP officials of the validity of his ideas as the reasons for his decision.

"I have come to the conclusion that it is better to step aside," he said.

Belaunde will meet with members of his proposed presidential team Carlos Bruce and Romulo Mucho, before making his official resignation to the National Election Panel. Enditem
