WARSAW, Feb. 1 (Xinhuanet) -- At total of 63 people were killed in the expo roof collapse in southern Poland's Katowice, according to the prosecutor's office investigating the accident on Wednesday.
Previous casualty figures were not accurate as various emergency departments had come up with different calculations for the deaths, blurring the actual figure, a spokesman for Katowice prosecutor's office said.
He added that some had claimed there had been up to 67 deaths in the accident on Jan. 28.
Katowice prosecutor's office said nine foreigners, from Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Belgium and the Netherlands, died inthe tragedy.
According to the prosecutors, one of the designers of the "flawed" exhibition hall tried in vain to commit suicide soon after the accident.
Polish Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro said the design and the construction of the building, as well as the accident itself, should all be investigated.
The rubble is still to be cleaned up and more bodies may be found.
The accident, in which the collapsed metal sheets and bars from the roof trapped 200 visitors attending one of Europe's biggest racing pigeon shows, was said to be the worst ever building disaster in Poland. Enditem |
