Bush: Palestinian state impossible unless Hamas recognizes Israel

WASHINGTON, Feb. 1 (Xinhuanet) -- U.S. President George W. Bush warned on Wednesday that the vision of a Palestinian state cannot be realized if a Hamas-led government refuses to renounce its desire to destroy Israel.

"The conditions for peace and the conditions for a settlement will be up to Hamas to make the right decisions," Bush told reporters.

This is another repetition by Bush who called on Tuesday in hisannual State of the Union for the Palestinian Islamic Resistant Movement (Hamas) to recognize Israel, disarm and work for peace.

"The Palestinian people have voted in elections -- now the leaders of Hamas must recognize Israel, disarm, reject terrorism, and work for lasting peace," Bush said in the State of the Union address.

Hamas, which reportedly has carried out nearly 60 suicide bombings against Israelis over the past five years, has so far rejected the call to renounce violence and recognize Israel. Enditem
