Latest report: Alito sworn in as US Supreme Court justice
WASHINGTON, Jan. 31 (Xinhuanet) -- The U.S. Senate on
Tuesday confirmed the nomination of Samuel Alito for the Supreme Court, by a
vote of 58-42.
Senators cast their votes largely on a party line, with all but one Republicans voting for the nomination while
most Democrats voting against it.
Alito, 55, who has served as a U.S. appeals court
judge, would replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor as the 110th justice
at the Supreme Court.
He was expected to be sworn in at the Supreme Court
Tuesday, and ceremonially sworn in a second time at a White House East Room
appearance on Wednesday. Enditem |
