BEIJING, Jan. 31 -- Al-Qaida's
number two, Ayman al-Zawahri, has called U.S. President George W. Bush a
"butcher" and a "failure" and has threatened a new attack in the United States
in a videotape aired on Arab television Monday, his first appearance since an
American airstrike targeted him this month in Pakistan.
"Bush, you are not only defeated and a liar, but with
God's help, you are also a failure. You are a demon to your nation. You brought
disasters to it. Bush, the failed crusader, you should know that we are opposite
to you," said Al-Zawahri in the video.
Al-Zawahri, shown in the video wearing white robes
and a white turban, says the United States has ignored an offer from al-Qaida
leader Osama bin Laden for a truce. The video has aired on the Arab news network
Al-Jazeera.
The video comes in the wake of a January 19th
audiotape by bin Laden in which he warns that al-Qaida is preparing attacks in
the United States but offers a truce "with fair conditions" to build Iraq and
Afghanistan. The tape - aired on Al-Jazeera - is the first message from bin
Laden in over a year. Enditem
