CARACAS, Jan. 29 (Xinhuanet) -- The World Social Forum ended on Sunday with a debate on how to include governments and political parties, beyond the non-government organizations that dominated the first meeting in Porto Alegre, Brazil in 2001, local media reported.
Observers agreed that the Caracas meeting has been the most political to date, with controversies about the relationship between activists and governments and political forces, after a call by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez for the forum not to waste its time, and instead to adopt more concrete policies.
Chavez, who took part in the forum twice at the invitation of organizer, the World Assembly of Social Movements, became the first head of state to speak in the forum's closing debate.
The Venezuelan government was heavily involved in the organization of this forum, which started on Tuesday and focused heavily on the political experiment taking place in Venezuela.
Forum participants announced an international day of mobilization against the occupation of Iraq for March 18.
The Caracas meeting hosted 70,000 activists, the smallest since2002, with around 10,000 coming from overseas. This year, the forum was organized in three venues, in Caracas, one in Mali, West Africa, and one in Pakistan, which takes place in March.
Next year, the forum will have only one venue, which is Nairobi, capital of Kenya. Enditem |
