(Xinhuanet) -- Russia has arrested two spies allegedly working for British
intelligence, the Interfax news agency reported on Saturday.
"Two British spies have been arrested. Of course they
are not silent. They are talking," Nikolai Kovalyov, former chief of the Federal
Security Bureau (FSB), told Russia's NTV television station in a program that is
scheduled to be aired Sunday night, Interfax said.
But Kovalyov did not specify whether the arrests were
related to the "fake rock" affair.
In London, a Foreign Office spokesman said Britain
was seeking more information from the Russian Foreign Ministry on the latest
case.
Last Sunday, Russia's state television broadcast a
video footage showing four British embassy officials liaising with a fake rock
in which a transmitter was concealed, in a Moscow park, downloading data from
the transmitter.
On Wednesday, Russia's lower house of parliament
condemned the support of foreign intelligence services for non-governmental
organizations (NGOs)in the country.
In a statement issued by the State Duma, deputies
expressed concern about "the funding of NGOs by individuals engaged in
intelligence activities on the territory of Russia, namely some staff members of
the British embassy."
"Such actions undermine trust in NGOs as a generally
recognized, important institution of civil society," the statement said. Enditem
