WARSAW, Jan. 29 (Xinhuanet) -- The death toll in the roof collapseof an exhibition hall in Katowice, in the south of Poland, has risen to 60, local authorities said on Sunday.

    "Unfortunately we have more tragic information: 60 people have died," Andrzej Fiema, an official at the crisis management center organizing rescue efforts in Katowice, told TVN24 television.

    "This is information from all rescue services, so, fire, policeand medical services," Fiema added.

    Meanwhile, local authorities confirmed that another 141 people were wounded in the accident.

    The snow-covered roof collapsed at 1615 GMT on Saturday when 500 people were gathering in the hall for a racing pigeon show.

    Rescuers used trained dogs early Sunday to search for dozens trapped in the ruins.

    The temperature dropped to minus 15 degrees Celsius overnight. The hopes of finding survivors are fading after no one has been found alive for six hours in the severe cold.

    Rescuers feared that the toll could rise further higher.

Some 100 people might be trapped in the wreckage of the building the size of a soccer field where an international meeting of pigeon enthusiasts was being held.

The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals while rescuers fought their way through the debris from the collapsed metal roof under floodlights.
