During his stay in Chengdu, the capital of southwestern Sichuan Province and also known as "Lotus City", Zoellick met with the Provincial Governor Zhang Zhongwei and visited a panda research center.

Zhang briefed the guest on the economic development of the province over the past few years.

According to Zhang, Sichuan's overall GDP hit 738 billion RMB (or 91.56 billion U.S. dollars), twice the figure for 1999 when China kicked off a "go west" strategy aimed to bring prosperity to its vast western regions. The province's GDP per capita has reached 1,105 U.S. dollars so far.

After its arrival in Beijing on the evening of Jan. 23, the U.S. deputy secretary of state met or held talks respectively with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, and Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing and Vice Foreign Minister Dai Bingguo.

China is Zoellick's second leg of a three-nation tour. He started his tour from Japan, where he stayed from Jan. 22 to 23. Enditem
