CHENGDU, Jan. 25 (Xinhuanet) -- U.S. Deputy Secretary
of State Robert Zoellick left here Wednesday at the end of his three-day visit
to China.
Zoellick will proceed to go for the 2006 annual
meeting of the World Economic Forum scheduled to be held in Davos of Switzerland
from Jan 25 to 29.
During his stay in Chengdu, the capital of
southwestern Sichuan Province and also known as "Lotus City", Zoellick met with
the Provincial Governor Zhang Zhongwei and visited a panda research center.
Zhang briefed the guest on the economic development
of the province over the past few years.
According to Zhang, Sichuan's overall GDP hit 738
billion RMB (or 91.56 billion U.S. dollars), twice the figure for 1999 when
China kicked off a "go west" strategy aimed to bring prosperity to its vast
western regions. The province's GDP per capita has reached 1,105 U.S. dollars so
far.
After its arrival in Beijing on the evening of Jan.
23, the U.S. deputy secretary of state met or held talks respectively with
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, and Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing and Vice Foreign
Minister Dai Bingguo.
China is Zoellick's second leg of a three-nation
tour. He started his tour from Japan, where he stayed from Jan. 22 to 23.
