Ulan Bator Mayor Enkhbold elected Mongolia's new PM

ULAN BATOR, Jan. 25 (Xinhuanet) -- The Mongolian parliament on Wednesday elected Ulan Bator Mayor Miyeegombo Enkhbold as the country's new prime minister.

Miyeegombo Enkhbold, also chairman of the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party (MPRP), promised in the parliament that his government would focus on speeding up the country's economic development.

The appointment of Enkhbold put an end to the political crisis triggered two weeks ago by the decision of 10 cabinet ministers from the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party (MPRP) to quit thecoalition government of Prime Minister Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj.

According to Mongolia's constitution, the ministers' move effectively amounted to the resignation of the entire cabinet. The MPRP said the action was sparked by a slowdown in economic growth and rising inflation.

Since the parliament dissolved the government of Elbegdorj, from the Motherland democracy coalition, the MPRP, the largest party in the country, had held talks with other political parties in a bid to gather support for its prime minister nominee Enkhbold.

Enkhbold now faces a task to appoint cabinet ministers to form a new government.

Before his appointment as prime minister, the MPRP had already invited the other parties to form a new coalition government, and several have agreed to enter the new government.

After Mongolia's parliamentary elections in 2004, a coalition government was created between the MPRP and the Motherland Democracy Coalition. Enditem
