WASHINGTON, Jan. 24 (Xinhuanet) -- The United States said on Tuesday that it looks forward to working with the new Canadian government and strengthening bilateral relations.

"The Canadian elections have taken place, the Canadian people have spoken, and I believe that there's going to be a new government in Canada led by Mr.(Stephen) Harper," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said at a briefing.

"We look forward to working with Mr. Harper and his government, just as we would look forward to working with any Canadian government. Canada's a good friend and ally and we look forward to strengthening our already strong bonds," McCormack said.

McCormack said he also wishes the outgoing Canadian prime minister Paul Martin well.

Stephen Harper, a 46-year-old economist, became the winner of Canada's elections on Monday and will become Canada's first right-wing prime minister in 12 years. Enditem
