LAGOS, Jan. 24 (Xinhuanet) --At least eight policemen and a civilian were killed on Tuesday as gunmen attacked the offices of the Italian oil company Agip in the southern Nigerian state of Rivers, police said.
"Nine people were killed, one of them was a civilian, I don't know whether he is Agip oil worker, eight others were policemen," Rivers state police spokeswoman Ireju Barasua told Xinhua by telephone.
She said the attackers in army camouflage came through the water in front of the offices at 3 p.m. (1400 GMT), exchanged fire with policemen on duty and robbed a cash point on the premises.
"It was a robbery incident and the workers in the bank told us four million naira (about 30,769 U.S. dollars) were carted away. The bank is the cash point in Agip," Barasua said. Enditem |
