JERUSALEM, Jan. 22 (Xinhuanet) -- Israel's Likud party chairman Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that both Israel and the Palestinians would need to make compromises to reach a peace deal.Netanyahu made the remarks while presenting his party's platform in anticipation of the coming March elections. He said that Israel would compromise on territory but not on security, expressing rejections to Israel's return to its pre-1967borders and to other unilateral Israeli withdrawals."In the present circumstances, the 1967 lines are not borders that would end the conflict but rather perpetuate it," Netanyahu said.
Presenting the Likud party's platform for the coming elections,Netanyahu proposed moving the separation fence to its original route which was then recommended by the defense establishment.Such a move would contradict Israeli Supreme Court's ruling against the barrier's original route. In June 2004, the court rejected the fence's original route, saying it "enveloped 35,000Palestinians in penal-like conditions."
The Likud leader, meanwhile, called for a reduction of friction with the Palestinian population and recommended removing military checkpoints in the West Bank in an effort to boost the Palestinian economy.
"Illegal settlement outposts must be removed," said Netanyahu.Talking on Iran, Netanyahu quoted late U.S. president Theodore Roosevelt as saying that Israel should "speak softly, and carry a big stick." Enditem |
