Reviews: Band beats singer
www.chinaview.cn 2006-01-21 08:28:21

BEIJING, Jan. 21 -- In music circles, there is a saying that an independent singer can't compete with a band. That means when you separate from your band to go solo, your album can never sell as well as when with the band.

There are several examples to illustrate this phenomenon. Famous band "The Rolling Stones" topped over one million sales for each of their albums. However, after leaving the band, singer Mick Jagger's own album did comparatively badly with only less than half a million copies sold. Also, Robin Gibb from "The Bee Gee's" suffered the same fate. He issued three albums after leaving the band, but all of them failed drastically.

The same instances can also be found domestically. There was once a Chinese band called "Face" which distributed a CD entitled "The Nature of Fire" in 1995. The album was so hot that it became worth 200 RMB by 1998. However, the band's singer Chen Hui's subsequent solo albums were little-known and most of them were left unsold. ¡¡

On the contrary, music partners can achieve great success if they're from different fields.

For instance, the well-known BB King and Eric Clapton collaborated on "Riding with the King" in 2000, and the album won a Grammy the following year. Here at home, newcomers "Long Kuan Jiu Duan" grew hot. The two partners have little in common, but they cannot leave each other. Songwriter Tian Peng is not able to perform his songs without Long Kuan's delivery, while singer Long can't show her unique style without Tian¡¯s creation. ¡¡

It's a similar story for musicians Hu Zi and Wang Juan. Hu Zi is one of the top electronic musicians in China, excelling at Glitch Dub as well as Ambient Techno. On the other hand, Wang is a folk singer. Her voice is clear and natural. However, extreme electronic music is often difficult for common audiences to accept, while folk songs played on guitar often sound too simple. In this case, Hu Zi and Wang Juan merged their two styles, producing the album "Gemini Trip". "Gemini Trip" is a combination of the two music genres, and it was warmly welcomed among music fans. Just as Cui Jian, a famous music producer, said, "Hu Zi and Wang Juan's songs are not only like passionate electricity, but also clear water."
