Brazil soccer coach defines World Cup plans
www.chinaview.cn 2006-01-20 08:41:09

RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan. 19 (Xinhuanet) -- Carlos Alberto Parreira, the manager of Brazil's national soccer squad told Brazilian mediaon Thursday that he had picked the players who will go to the Germany World Cup which begins in June.

"We had problems choosing because we have a catalogue of excellent players and there is not enough room in the team for all of those who made the grade," he said.

He added that some cases hint at possible changes, such as Ricardo Oliveira, whose injury means that Fred, who plays for French league team Lyon, may join the team.

Cafu, a veteran of the Brazilian national team, is going through a bad phase and is only used a substitute in Italian league team Milian, his home team.

"Cafu has a lot of experience -- he has been in three World Cups -- and that counts for a lot," the manager said.

He also said he was worried about the fitness of Spanish league team Barcelona's star player Ronaldo de Assis, known as Ronaldinho. Saying that the player needs to take a rest before the World Cup starts.

"Ronaldinho is in exceptional form right now, but will he be able to keep it up until July? I don't think he will -- if he continues to play all these tournaments with Barcelona up to mid-May," Barcelona is flying high in the Spanish league and the open competition, Spain's King's Cup and it is also playing in the Europe-wide Champions' League.

The Brazilian coach said that he draws on the same source of inspiration as his predecessor, Luis Felipe Scolari: reading The Art of War by Sun Tzu, a fifth century B.C. strategist from China.

Scolori used to stimulate his players before Sun Tzu phrases like "we have to defend when our force is weak and attack when our force is stronger."

Parreira said that Brazil's national soccer team had to train with a warrior spirit, because no-one will give the World Cup as a gift to Brazil's team. Enditem
