BEIJING, Jan. 19 (Xinhuanet) -- China will try its best to propose every possible suggestion that could lead to an early resumption of the six-party talks, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Kong Quan said here Thursday.

    Kong made the remarks at a regular press conference, saying that China hopes to get coordination from all parties involved in the talks on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue. The six parties refer to China, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), the United States, the Republic of Korea, Japan and Russia.

    Kong confirmed a meeting was held among representatives from China, the DPRK and the United States in Beijing on Wednesday. They all spoke positively of the meeting, saying that it was beneficial.

    He said China has been keeping contacts with other parties at various levels, demonstrating its important role in promoting the six-party talks.

    China hopes all the parties will, setting store by the overall interests, mutually respect, communicate with each other, gradually reduce differences and overcome "complicated factors" emerging from the talks so as to resume the second phase meeting of the fifth round of the talks as early as possible, Kong said.

    Kong stressed that the six-party mechanism can not be changed, the ultimate goal of achieving a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula through peaceful talks can't be changed either.

    China has been working on solving the nuclear issue and will continue to do so, he added.

Libya's adherence to one-China policy

    In response to a question concerning the relations between Libya and Taiwan, spokesman Kong Quan said that China appreciates the Libyan government's adherence to the one-China policy, and expects a stronger Sino-Libyan ties on the basis of the one-China policy.

    Kong said Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing is visiting Libya and has held talks with Libyan top leader Muammar Ghaddafi. Ghaddafi stated clearly that Libya will unswervingly stick to the one-China principle whatever happens. His country firmly opposes to "Taiwan independence", and supports China's reunification cause.

    Kong reiterated that China is firmly opposed to any official contacts between Taiwan and countries which have diplomatic ties with China.

    "We hope these countries can properly handle the Taiwan question in accordance with principles on the establishment of diplomatic ties.

US deputy secretary of state to visit China

    U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick will visit China from Jan. 23 to 25, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan announced on Thursday.

    During Zoellick's visit, the two sides will exchange views on China-U.S. relations and on major international and regional issues of common concern, said Kong. Enditem
