Over 3,200 still listed missing in Katrina hit

WASHINGTON, Jan. 18 (Xinhuanet) -- Over 3,200 people are still officially listed as missing nearly five months after Hurricane Katrina hit the U.S. Gulf Coast region in late August last year, local media reported Wednesday.

The Find Family National Call Center, a center run by federal and state workers, received reports of some 11,500 people missing after Katrina hit the southern states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama on Aug. 29.

More than 1,300 people, most of them from Louisiana, were killed in the disastrous storm and about 1 million others were displaced.

As of Wednesday, more than 3,200 still remained accounted for, the call center was citing as saying.

Some of those missing might have been washed into Lake Pontchartrain in New Orleans, Louisiana, or their bodies remained in the rubble that still blanketed much of the city.

But some of those still listed as missing might have been found and the call center hadn't been notified of their status, and some others might not want to be found because of criminal or legal problems, the center said. Enditem
