US issues new ID cards for border-crossing
www.chinaview.cn 2006-01-18 09:56:47

BEIJING, Jan. 18 -- Officials in the US have outlined steps to bolster US border security, with the introduction of a new travel card for land border crossings expected to be in place by the end of the year.

Speaking at the state department, US secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice says the US would take three steps "to renew America's welcome".

"First, we seek to use new information technology, making it as easy as possible for foreign visitors to travel to the United States and to do so securely and safely. Second, we seek to create travel documents for the 21st century; documents that can protect personal identity and expedite secure travel. "

She adds the third pillar of the US strategy is to conduct "smarter screening".

Meanwhile, Homeland Security Secretary, Michael Chertoff, Says the People Access Security Service or PASS system will be used at land border crossings in Canada and Mexico.

The new PASS identification card will resemble a driver's license and prevent regular travellers from having to carry their passports.

The system will balance security concerns at home with the need for people to enter and exit the country without undue delays.
