Yan, Yuan claim 1st round wins

     BEIJING, Jan. 18 -- Yan Zi and Yuan Meng have each snatched a first round victory in the Australian Open, lighting China's hope in the year-opening grand slam event.


Yan Zi

    21-year-old Yan struggled to eliminate French 11th seed Nathalie Dechy, 7-6, 6-2 and 6-3.

    Her teammate Yuan eased past Melinda Czink of Hungary in straight sets 6-4, 6-2

    China's Zheng Jie, however, was beaten 2-1 by Russian rival Anna Chakvetadze.
