LONDON, Jan. 17 (Xinhuanet) -- Britain's Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown, met with pensioners in London on Tuesday, promising to offer increased range of financial support help older people.
Speaking before a meeting with a pensioners group in Streatham, South London, Gordon Brown said, "I am today announcing details of the extra 300 million pound of new measures to help pensioners through the cold weather."
Brown said that "All pensioners who need their homes insulated or require central heating will now be able to benefit from either free or discounted installation of central heating and insulation."
The homes of an estimated two million pensioner in the country are without insulation and half a million pensioner homes go without central heating.
At least 200 pound for pensioner households to back up the Winter Fuel Allowance, a governmental project to help pensioners for a warm winter, are paid every year.
The government is allocating an extra 300 million pound to extend this support and persuade energy companies to join in providing free or discounted insulation. Enditem |
