Big security council members agree on Iran
www.chinaview.cn 2006-01-17 14:57:10

BEIJING, Jan.17 -- European powers have begun drafting a resolution to have Iran referred to the U.N. Security Council next month over its nuclear program.

Britain's Foreign Office says Britain, Germany and France would call for an emergency meeting of the U.N. nuclear watchdog's 35-nation board of governors in Vienna on February 2-3. A vote on sending Iran to the Security Council could be held then.

The International Atomic Energy Agency is expected to discuss the EU's draft resolution in a few weeks.

Britain's Foreign Secretary Jack Straw says that sanctions are not inevitable even if the nuclear dispute is referred to the Security Council.

Officials from the US, Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia held a day-long closed-door talks Monday in London, on Iran's resumption of nuclear activities.

Tensions mounted last week after Iran resumed nuclear fuel research. But Tehran defended its move saying that it would not go as far as making weapons.

Britain's Foreign Office says the six countries have agreed that Iran must fully suspend its nuclear program.

Iran has warned of soaring oil prices if sanctions are introduced.
