Venus Williams became a shock victim of seeds at the Australian Open as she failed to clear little-known Bulgarian Tszvetana Pironkova in the 1st round.
CANBERRA, Jan. 16 (Xinhuanet) -- Most of the women's seeds went into the second round on the first day of the Australian Open in Melbourne Monday, except ninth seed Elena Dementieva and 10th seed Venus Williams.

Defending champion Serena Williams survived a tight three-set match against China's Li Na, winning 6-3, 6-7 (1-7) and 6-2.

Serena Williams had looked in danger when she lost her opening service game in the third set. She would have become only the second defending champion to lose in the opening round in Melbounre after Jennifer Capriati in 2003.

World No. 1 Lindsay Davenport beat Australian Casey Dellacqua 6-2, 6-1, fourth seed Russian Maria Sharapova outclassed Germany'sSandra Kloesel 6-2, 6-1 and former Australian Open champion Justine Henin-Hardenne dismissed Czech Marta Domachowska by straight sets.

Venus Williams lost to 18-year-old Bulgarian Tszvetana Pironkova, the 94th in the world ranking. Full coverage
