Kylie Minogue clear of cancer: Publicist
www.chinaview.cn 2006-01-16 12:21:14

BEIJING, Jan. 16 -- Australian pop superstar Kylie Minogue has had no recurrence of breast cancer since an operation in May, but her treatment is continuing, her publicist said on Friday.

The statement was issued following a report in British tabloid newspaper The Sun that the diminutive 37-year-old singer had been given the all clear by doctors.

According to the report, the news was given by doctors in Paris, the home of Minogue's partner, French actor Olivier Martinez, a week ago and she had returned to Australia to celebrate.

Minogue was "utterly, unbelievably overjoyed" to learn that the six-month chemotherapy treatment programme for breast cancer had been successful, the paper said, citing an unnamed source "close" to the star.

"She is thrilled and relieved. It's been a tough few months and there have been times when she felt very weak and very down," the paper quoted the source as saying.

"For the past couple of months she has been feeling very positive and healthy. She has put a bit of weight on and has been feeling confident about the future."

The statement from Minogue's publicist was positive but more cautious.

"On May 21st last year Kylie's surgeon announced that the operation to remove the cancer was successful," the statement said.

"Since that time Kylie has been undergoing treatments to prevent a return of the cancer. Kylie remains keen to return to work and in particular to re-schedule the 'Showgirl' tour of Australia.

"Fortunately we are still able to say we have received no news of a re-occurrence of the cancer; however at this point in time Kylie's treatments are continuing."

Earlier Friday, veteran Australian music entrepreneur and producer Ian "Molly" Meldrum told British television he understood Minogue was recovering.

"The treatment was quite severe and probably Kylie was a lot sicker than most of us thought," he told GMTV television.

"But now, obviously, she is coming home for a little while and, as I say, the chemo is finished and I guess that she is now well on her way to recovery."

Minogue had been undergoing chemotherapy in Paris after having a partial mastectomy in Melbourne, Australia, in May when she found a lump in her left breast.

According to The Sun, the chart-topping star had her final chemotherapy session on December 18 and received final test results on January 6, which showed there were no more cancerous cells.

However, she is now expected to start daily radiation treatment to prevent the return of the disease and only after another six months will she be officially in remission.

Minogue, who was based in London for many years, is Australia's biggest pop star, selling an estimated 40 million records worldwide.
