China to face Italy 1st at World Championships

    BEIJING, Jan. 16 -- China will face Italy in its first game of the basketball world championships while defending champion Serbia-Montenegro will play Nigeria.

    China was drawn in Group D on Sunday along with the USA, Puerto Rico, Senegal, Slovenia and Italy.

    Serbia-Montenegro has a record five world titles and is in Group A with Athens Olympic gold medalists Argentina.

    The 24-team 2006 FIBA Men's World Championship will be held August 19 to September 3 in Japan.

    China finished twelfth in the last championships in 2002.
